Artist Statement 2001

Sandra Florez 2001

Sandra Florez, Artist

Hello, and thank you for spending some time with my work. I hope my work resonated with you in some way if for no other reason than just a pleasant break in your day. Typically, this is the place where I should offer the details of my background and how I came to create what you see before you. I can list the formal and informal education, the various jobs from my childhood to now, successes, failures, catalysts for change, the inspiration for my deep rooted vision but life is really too short. What is important to know about my road is that it is the same one you are on with all the turns, twists, and up hill climbs sprinkled with a few map miscalculations, flat tires, and all that goes with navigating through life as I accelerate forward.

As an artist, I have been going through the process of burning the fields of my life in order to replant a more bountiful crop. I believe there is much to be gained by pushing past our moments of discomfort and revealing parts of ourselves so that we can then "spread the beauty" to other's. Each of us is our own unique piece of art with opportunities everyday to find ways to express ourselves in the world. Each of us craft a side of ourselves everyday applying what we have learned, striving for what we want to learn, and celebrating what we know. I know I am making art when my body moves in unison with my heart.
